I agree, I don't see a reason to remove (or complicate) that easy way to extend SC.
If you're working with different versions of SC, this is not suppeorted by the Quarks system.
Probably there's no easy way to handle the version problem with extensions anyway,
but that's one more reason to keep the current conventions with the Extensions folder.
