Not strange: if 'stop' had no explicit default it was 0, so set to a value x > 0
it works as a trigger (a trigger by definition is a transition from
non-positive - which includes 0 - to positive). 
But then 'stop' keeps the positive value and a next setting 
doesn't trigger anymore - I meant this when saying
"only once and only if it wasn't > 0 before"

If you're going to trigger only once with your Synths,
your first construct works fine - but I supposed that
you would also want to trigger one Synth more than once.
