[sc-users] Do I need git to install the sc3-plugins for SC 3.6? And other questions...

I'm pretty stuck with installing SC and the sc3-plugins extensions for Linux
Mint. I have a series of questions:

1) Why does apt have an out-of-date supercollider package (3.5), but I need
to add a ppa to get 3.6 (i.e from here:
https://launchpad.net/~supercollider/+archive/ppa)? Isn't this just going to
confuse newcomers? I was really confused when I initially installed
supercollider and couldn't run the IDE (because the IDE is new in 3.6, and I
had inadvertedly installed 3.5). Should the old version be removed from the
default package source?

2) I'm now getting 'API Version Mismatch' errors from the IDE. I assume this
is because I have version 3.6 of SC, but the plugins I installed are for
version 3.5. Is that correct?

3) Why is sc3-plugins available from both SourceForge and github?
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/sc3-plugins/files/ and
https://github.com/supercollider/sc3-plugins) I assume from the commit dates
that the github repo is active and the SourceForge one is dead. Is that
correct? If it is correct, should the SourceForge one be closed down to
avoid confusion? And should the link to the SourceForge repo from the
introductory text in the github repo be removed?

4) Am I right in concluding that to get hold of a version of sc3-plugins
that is actually compatible with SC 3.6 I need to use the github repo as
opposed to the SourceForge one?

5) When I try to build the sc3-plugins stuff from the github repo using the
instructions on the main page, I get an error from the cmake command telling
me I need to run 'git submodule init && git submodule update'. Do I really
need to clone a github repository to install the plugins? Why can't I just
use the zip file which is linked to from the main page? If I can't use the
zip file should it be available to download at all?

I appreciate this is a lot of questions but I'm finding the documentation
available regarding installation of the plugins a little insufficient, at
least for someone of my skill level. If I can get answers to some of these
questions I'm happy to provide more detailed documentation.
