Re: [sc-users] freetts and windows (noob)

Fantastic. Thanks for the heads up!

There's a code-sprint soon to make a newer puredyne; but besides that,
supercollider is updated to 3.4 in the puredyne repo, so if you run
puredyne from a USB you can use the normal update manager (synaptic)
to update to that - it will persist.

  Thanks Dan,

I actually had a dual boot with pure:dyne on it a month ago. Things became a
bit unstable (probably my fault)... Anyway, I just upgraded to Windows 7 x64
and am afraid to try again. Do you know if the puredyne folks are working on
a new release with the latest SC? I wasn't sure if there was a process to
update the SC release and have it persist from session to session with the
Live CD/USB version.

No joy for me. Oh well, I guess I just don't get it... the freetts
examples
work outside of SC. Obviously missing something. If anyone has this
working
in windows, please drop me a line. I'd appreciate hearing from you.
Otherwise, I'm going to save my pennies for a macbook. Seems to me that
this
is the platform that will continue to be developed.

Any insights on relatively inexpensive options for a mac for SC use would
also be appreciated.
Well all macs are pricey for what they are, that's the end of the
market they sit on. Use linux, SC is going strong there :) For example
try one of the audio-centric ubuntu derivatives. Here's one you can
run from a USB without endangering your windows: http://puredyne.org/

  Hi Sciss,

Thanks for the quick response.

I tried putting the .jar files in a lot of different locations:

c:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\lib
c:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6\lib
c:\Program Files (x86)\SuperCollider\
c:\Program Files (x86)\SuperCollider\SCClassLibrary\
c:\Program Files (x86)\SuperCollider\SCClassLibrary\SwingOSC\

I even reinstalled the jre into the root drive and tried:

c:\Java\

Each time I would change the classpath to include these paths, but each
time I tried to run the example I would get the same result.

I'll try putting it in the Extensions folder and see what happens. It
just
might be time to get a Mac...

hi,

i recently reviewed the install process. this is from the current
JSpeech
help file:

JSpeech lets you use the java freetts speech synthesizer.

To use this synthesizer, you will have to install the free java
text-to-speech synthesis package "FreeTTS"
    - Download and unzip the 1.2.2 binary from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/freetts
    - Copy at least the following files from the lib folder into your's
system class path:
        cmu_us_kal.jar
        cmulex.jar
        en_us.jar
        freetts.jar
(the java system class path for example on Mac OS X is :
/Library/Java/Extensions)
    - Copy the file speech.properties into your home folder (~)
    - (Re)boot SwingOSC

hope that helps.

I'm new to SC (half way through the Cottle book). I was recently
reviewing my
reading (had to put SC down for a month to complete a time lapse
project)
and decided to give the "Hello World".speak; example a try. I
downloaded
freetts, set up the classpath, etc... I continue to get the error:

getObject : java.lang.ClassNotFoundException :
com.sun.speech.freetts.VoiceManager

    at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method)

FAILURE /method Object not found : com.sun.speech.freetts.VoiceManager
FAILURE /methodr Cannot operate on null result
FAILURE /method Object not found : speech
FAILURE /set Object not found : speech
FAILURE /method Object not found : speech

I've tried dynamically adding classes, moving the freetts.jar to
various
locations, but to no avail.

Has anyone had success having SC locate freetts in the Windows
environment,
and would be willing to help a newcomer?
