Title: Re: [sc-users] Experimental performances in Beijing (was Re: How did you learn SC? (was: Textures, drones) - china)
Bion,
I was in Beijing a couple of years ago (I’m sure things have change now of course) and I met Ken Fields.
However, he informed me that he was moving to Canada although he planned to return to China periodically.
I also met Benoit Granier, who I understand is still there and at Beijing University.
I think he would be a good contact at the academic level.
I’m not sure that there is much SC3 activity there though.
As for experimental music/sound performances, there is a place called “2 Kolegas” which is a bar/performance venue.
(2 kolegas bar, qi che dian ying yuan (drive in movie theater, north side of dong feng road, 300 meters west of dong feng qiao) (www.2kolegas.com))
Yan Jun frequently runs performance nights called “WaterLand Kwanyin” at “2 Kolegas”.
Yan Jun runs a label called “Sub Jam” and has recently been putting events on in the 798 Art District at the UCCA gallery.
Check out www.subjam.org/
There was also (I don’t know whether it is still there) a great record shop in 798 called “Sugar Jar” which had an amazing collection of Chinese experimental music/sound.
The scene is more broadly experimental with performances from visiting European and Asian artists.
I attended a festival called “Mini Midi” and was amazed at how diverse and experimental the scene was.
I’m sure it is even more so now.
Anyway, worth checking out just to see what activities and venues are around and meet interesting artists.
Cheers,
Alistair
