Re: [sc-users] Re: How did you learn SC? (was: Textures, drones)

As a recent convert, my story is short. I used Max for several years while studying with teachers who used only Max. My phd chair was one of the original programmers of Max. I developed a version of CataRT for some pieces + my dissertation piece. I experimented with scripting my Max application with Ruby (which actually sort of works).

This past winter, I finally bit the bullet and decided to commit to learning SC. I'd gone through tutorials and poked around in the past, but I knew that the only way to learn SC is with a project. Since March, I've been developing what is now a fairly complete alpha version of a corpus-based sampling system, and I've learned much of SC.

Two observations: (1) Learning Ruby before learning SuperCollider made things much clearer. There are a lot of great Ruby tutorials and examples out there, and many of the concepts apply to sclang.  (2) Including a complex GUI in your first major SC project makes learning the audio and music aspects of SC seem simple and intuitive.

=tms

PS: The SC version of my corpus-based processing is just about ready for release, probably some time this week...just a few more bugs to kill

<homersimpson>mmmm ACToolbox</homersimpson> still a go-to tool for me,
sometimes.
