hi scott,
your post is very interesting and highly valuable for my current
research that involves supercollider, so thank you very much for
sharing these observations! in most points i have had similar
experiences and found similar problems with large scale supercollider
projects (most apply already with medium-sized ones i think), so this
kind of encourages me that i'm not being too idiosyncratic there.
while it is not aiming at replacing sclang as the code-on-the-fly
environment, the framework i am developing, a supercollider client in
the scala language, will address several of the issues you have
mentioned, including the lack of debugging tools and compile-time
checks, server execution order, and version control. at the moment,
this is in alpha / planning stage, and i am soaking up the kind of
input you just provided.
I've been excited about the possibilities of scala, based on your
occasional comments. I've been getting my feet wet at attempting to add
debugging to SCLang itself. It's been slow going, and it may prove
impossible in the way I'm thinking about it, but at the very least it's
given me a chance to dig deep and learn some more about SC's virtual
machine (it's scary in there....).
