Re: [sc-users] End to end amplitude control and system headroom?

If you are ok with going for dynamic processing, multiply your signal by some amount which will likely make it clip, and wrap Limiter.ar around it to avoid clipping. There is also Compander.ar for compression.

Actually I'm normalizing all the sample files as I prepare them, although this isn't always as effective as one might hope. Sometimes you get a sort of outlier cycle with a very high value that limits the normalization of the overall signal.

Another alternative I've thought of is coding in a compressor to pump things up near the end of the signal chain. Or I could just go Spinal Tap, turn it up to 11, and be sure to mind the Dubley.

Agreed--one really simple approach to see if it isn't just an issue
with the sample you're using. After b = Buffer...(whatever) do
b.normalize. This should at least normalize your sample, which will
give you some kind of uniform base point to start from when you're
comparing one sample to another.

Thanks guys. Very helpful. I'm clear on compression effects, the high energy of oscillator waveforms, etc. Just wanted a reality check on the
audio server.

cheers,

An oscillator is hitting full code on every cycle. It's a lot louder than

Take a look at the waveform of most rock recordings these days...
compressed to hell and normalized to 0. But yes, the BIG difference there is how we perceive steady state sin tones versus drums and distorted guitar.
