Hello, my students are getting this error when installing the program on window XP. I cannot figure out the reason, or  what to do.

Supercollider itself is working fine.

What's not working is SwingOSC. This is the GUI component. You can run non-GUI code with no problem even with this error.

booting java -Dswing.defaultlaf=com.sun.java.swing.plaf.windows.WindowsLookAndFeel -jar SwingOSC.jar -t 57111 -L -i -h 127.0.0.1:57120
RESULT = 1
ERROR:
SwingOSC server failed to start

Do you know if your students have the latest Sun Java runtime environment installed? Try doing this at the Windows command line. If it shows an error, then Java isn't installed and the students will have to do that.

java --version

// Or maybe this, I don't remember offhand -- I'm pretty sure it's the double hyphen, though
java -version
