I also tried TPV and SMS, but they don't sound that great either actually. Plus they reach 30% CPU, so...
 
Would be nice to keep it all in the frequency domain though. I guess the thing you want is just to read a bigger or smaller chuck of audio per frame from the buffer holding the soundfile, or something like that right? I'm not looking for formant preservation in this case.
 
Any more thoughts?

You can try PV_BinShift, but I have never found the results there to be that good. Otherwise, yes - PitchShift is a granular option. FreqShift is another.
