Actually, if you hold down shift while you select something in the
terminal, it will copy it. Go to another application and click the
middle mouse button or press shift+insert and the text will be pasted.

Xterm, urxvt (my choice), and others are lighter than gnome-terminal,
xfce-terminal, etc. You do have to learn their tricks, but I think
they function nicely.
