I didn't change anything in original file.

the strange thing is it happens when I use Help Tree for the first time.

that means if I first use other help system like command-d and then use help tree, it works.
but if I open SC then use Help Tree first, 100 per cent it hangs.

I'm on 10.5.5 but I'm not sure have installed the latest svn sc, my download of 3.3 was back in 10th feb.

i'm guessing here but did you by any chance remove the ServerPlusGUI.sc?  not needed.  just leave the original class library untouched.
yes, the extServer5.sc overwrites the built-in makeWindow method.  that's all in order.  but it's just only overwriting it in 'memory' - that particular class method definition.  it doesn't touch the ServerPlusGUI file.  when you delete the file extServer5.sc it reverts back to the original method definition ServerPlusGUI.
