Somehow, when SC reads the file, it omits part of the line.

> w = GUI.window.new("Test") ;

The bit  GUI.window.new( is missing in the command the interpreter actually receives.

Maybe there are nonstandard characters accidentally input into the file?

What do you see if you go to the terminal and do this?

cd [location of startup file]
cat startup.ext

(where 'ext' should be replaced with the real extension)
