Lately in the list there have been various questions regarding the
existence
of a synthdef catalog or collection somewhere. I myself have a lot of
interest in the creation of such a document. I have been
collaborating for
some time with the Audio Workshop in the Multimedia Center in the
National
Center for the Arts in Mexico; and we'd be glad to host such a
valuable
document so that it is available publicly.
It would be nice if people could send their own synthdefs, or ones
they have
found through time.
Before starting with such a large duty, I would like to ask for
opinions
about how I should go about in establishing categories for the
synthdefs, or
how it could be more efficiently made available.
Right now I can think of two different possibilities:
1. categories
- Every person who sends synthdefs could also try to define their
synths in
specific categories.
- There could be specific criteria with which to categorize
synthdefs, for
instance, percussion, drone, melodic, ambiences, etc.
- We could take into consideration the technique with which a
certain synth
was created (AM, FM, granular synthesis, etc.)
2. search engine
- every submission of a synth would have to be accompanied by "tags"
describing the synth, so that any user could input his idea of what
he wants
and find similar synths.
The two possibilities are not mutually exclusive, actually, we could
have
both hosted inside a same webpage; so any user could go about
finding synths
either by searching them with the engine or browsing through the
categories.
So, now, I'll wait for some feedback on these ideas, and will start
working
on the web page.
