RE: [sc-users] Cluster with Supercollider

Hi Les,

sounds like a very interesting project.

I have experience with an older Dell Notebook. It seem that it works with the same chipset as xbox (http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-intel8x0). SC runs properly but the audio-performance is very poor. This means, sound is halting, interrupted by a noisy sound all the time.

I´m shure I could fix it by contacting the alsa-developers but for the Moment it is not important enough. I read reports of others that got it to work. So if your lucky yours it working out of the box.

I wish you good luck and I hope you can share your experience here, soon.

Hey folks,

I had an idea and I'm wondering if anybody out there has already done this.  I want to get a small collection of motherboards that have on-board ethernet and sound and I want to have them all on the same powersupply, all sharing a disk.  I'd like for each one's processor to be running a localhost SC server.  So this would be sort of like a remote-controlled DSP interface, but with low audio quality.  Obviously, this will be running linux.  My budget is near zero, so I'm trying to get machines via the local freecycle.  Somebody in the local linux group suggested that I look at xboxes.

My questions:  Is this possible?  What is the minimum system requirements for SC on linux?  Will it run on an xbox?  What factors should I take into account while looking for hardware?  Is there a retirement-age system that's especially suited to this task?  What online resources can you suggest?

Also, if anybody in Birmingham, England has an old computer they'd like to recycle or suggestions for places to look, that would be useful also.

Thanks for your time.  If I can get this going, I'll write a howto.

Cheers,
Les
