Two other minor annoyances:

  - The PREFIX directory is not created when it doesn't exist.

  - The X11 headers are looked for in '/usr/X11R6/X11/Intrinsic.h' by
default.  I wonder if this is not less common than having that file in
'/usr/include/X11/Intrinsic.h'.  Maybe a Mac-ism?

I'm happy to roll another patch once we come to an agreement to these points
and to the failure (?) to look into '$PREFIX/lib' for libraries that I
mentioned earlier.
