Ah, okay.  I guess I wasn't missing anything from the
documentation, after all.  I did find this amusing bit of text:

-v device-name

   Name of a sound i/o device to use. If not specified, the
   default device is used.  Currently this is ignored and the
   default device is used.

:-)

Thanks for the information!  I managed to get both outputs and
mic inputs up and running--easier than I thought it would be.

Now, to finish going through the tutorials!
