i saw a show on the tv on svt about the ice-cello etc. makers. they
crush up ice and add water and shape it. eventually the body is formed
and they attach non-ice end pieces, a bridge and strings (which can be
tensioned normally!) i can't remember if they added a wooden neck or
not, but the body sides and top were all ice, and very beautiful.
also: ice-flutes. of course, easier to make, but it melts as you play
it!
unfortunately the music they played on the tv show was sort of new-age
prettiness.
i tried recording ice when the lake freezes and it makes strange
sounds, but haven't captured it yet. i was sure last spring i would
get the ice-breakage, but again, no luck. (when i was at visby, it was
summer so i had to record rocks.) in terms of ice instruments, i think
i would prefer something that made sounds more intrinsic to the ice
itself.

I was in Kiruna some years ago for work, and had a look
at the ice hotel. The Absolut is served in ice-glasses.
Didn't sleep there but noticed the Japanese...
