[sc-users] startup file (output channels > 8)

hey everyone
I would like to override the default number of audio output buses to match my multichannel soundcard. 

I entered the following into my  ~/scwork/startup.rtf file

<x-tad-smaller>Server</x-tad-smaller><x-tad-smaller>.local.options.numOutputBusChannels = 18;	</x-tad-smaller><x-tad-smaller>// change number of input and output channels</x-tad-smaller><x-tad-smaller>
</x-tad-smaller>
but it's not working (ie. i cannot use output channels beyond output 7 (the eighth bus) 
I also changed this line to = 4, but could still write to 7.

perhaps the startup file is not being read?

I had this working before some months back, but i've forgotten how i fixed it.
(im running on os x 10.3 + metric halo 2882)

any ideas?
