ah, yes, you were right (kind of), thanks (the HW-Setup button wasn't accessible to me because it gets disabled once a client is connected). it's really strange. if i launch scsynth, scsynth reports 44.1 khz and digi audio driver says 96 khz (and the interface is in fact 96k). now, when i launch the digi coreaudio manager, go the hw-setup and switch to 44.1 khz, then launch scsynth, it's the opposite way, scsynth says digi is running at 96k, but the interface is in fact at 44.1 kHz ;-))))) now, the solution is, to first launch the manager, change SR, then launch scsynth and tell it with the -S option that we're really at 44.1 khz. a bit cryptic but it works.

well, it's a TDM system with HD Core and an 192 I/O interface. the default is 512 samples but according to the setup you can go down to 128 samples (= 3 ms at 44.1 khz).
