yes and no.  after speaking with marantz for the 100th time, i have 
learned that the cause of the additional noise in the file is due to 
the fact that 'the last 12 bits are backwards'.  so, libsndfile and all 
the other programs that can actually open and play the file, play an 
interestingly (annoyingly) distorted version of the file.  apparently, 
the only software that plays this format as it was intended is windows 
media player for windows.
