Being the SC novice here, I hesitate to make a
suggestion, but couldn't you run the melody through a
hipass filter (set about 30~ hz) and then simulate
rests via a lower frequency range? The low notes (i'd
choose 10 hz) would be inaudible, but also wouldn't
mush up the mix with low-end garbage.

I'm nowhere near a mac for the next few days, why
wouldn't a freq of zero work (i.e. what happened)?
