Yep, it's the Microsoft way... identify a perfectly good way to do things, strip it of features and turn it upside down and backward just enough to be incompatible, then release it to the lowest-common-denominator consumer (who will come to believe that the degraded, compromised Windows way is the *right* way and that every other OS is wrong). I hate them.

The issue with Windows shortcuts is logged on the tracker -- http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1870525&group_id=54622&atid=474248 -- once that is fixed then Quarks could create shortcuts instead of symlinks.
