Re: [Sc-devel] scel doc entry in mac save menu

Sorry, mental hiccup and I didn't see the word 'win'.

I understood. The discussion I posted was referring to windows testing.

I know it works on Mac. My concern is about Windows/Linux.

Try whatever you want (e.g. SCD...):
EVERYTHING is an image file extension :-)

So the issue is to choose something uncommon...

From my tests on win here in the lab, there's no problem in using ctrl+right click to "open with", i.e. opening the file with rtf format and a different extension with e.g. MSWord.
The real problems arises when one chooses extensions used by system. In that case, the "open with" is normally not available.

Because of this, sc* is intrinsically difficult (e.g. scr = screen icon, sct = script, etc)

scrt works fine, but it' s 4 chars.
rsc (--> Rich SC) is the best candidate: it is uncommon on win and mac, and works fine (rtfd --> rscd?.)

Maybe win/linux should take a deeper look in possible file extension issues.

I'm not sure that would be a good idea. People may count on rtf
files being readable in other applications. On Mac that seems to
work, but I'm not sure it would on other platforms.

If the file format is unchanged, you can always open the document
with whatever application you like, no?
I don't know on linux, but on win is like on mac, e.g. you ask to
open a scr with MSWord. But at least default application is with no
doubt SC.

Have you tested that?

If it works, I don't have a particular objection, as I find the lost
file associations annoying. But scr is maybe not the best choice, as
that's an image format I believe.
