no, I think it should change. 

it could be a classvar preference.

then for anyone running older, unchanged code, they could set it to false just while they run that old code.

they couldn't use any newer, updated gui systems at the same time.

there would be very little old style code around, and it wouldn't be hard for them to set it to false while they run with it.  probably they would then fix the old code.
