In terminal (if you type "ls -a" for example) you'll always see a "."
file as well as a ".." file, representing the current directory and
the parent directory respectively.

have you tried updating/commiting just the DIRECTORY folder? e.g. "svn
commit DIRECTORY". Does that work, or give the same error?
