no need to checkout the tagged branch.

I guess the tagged branch is mainly useful if we need to maintain

version and merge small bug fixes into it.  in practice we might
not use it.

Yep, either way really. The tag is mainly there as a convenience, for
people who can't remember which revision it was :) or for users who
like svn but shouldn't need to know which revision it was.
