ah, thanks James.  i didn't know about these issues with these smoothers.
i now use [0.02, 0.05, 0.05] (so lowering the one for frequency) and the pops seems to be gone.  could it be that setting a too big difference from the default argument makes the lag calculates a factor that's way too small/large?

Yes, I have been burned by lags on synth controls many, many times.
(Especially since I use Instr/Patch a lot and it wraps most inputs in
a Lag. I've had to suppress that behavior on more than one occasion.)

IIRC from an issue I had in the past, Pan2 is probably the culprit in
your synthdef. I bet if you change your rates array to [0.05, 0.05,
nil] you won't get the bursts anymore.

I think there is some kind of bug here but nobody has isolated exactly
what is going wrong. My theory is that Lag sometimes outputs a bad
value in the first control cycle.
