looks like the client didn't get the /status reply so it doesn't create the default group.

you could try to do that manually:

s.initTree

That's part of { }.play - did you try writing a true SynthDef and
creating the Synth node explicitly? If you get sound the latter way,
it means the server started but never sent notification back to the
client. If no sound, the server did not start successfully.
