Okay, I've committed a new version which compares every candidate
for each possible extension. It's WAY faster. This should have been
done a long time ago.
I think there may now be an unnecessary layer of dispatch, but I'm
too tired right now to chase it through.

On my machine a search on foobar trolls through and pops up main

I also got rid of the help.sc extension, as with Stefan's changes
