First of all, great idea!
I'll have a closer look at it when I get
home today, but for now, I just wanted to let
you know that there is one additional potential
backend for this, i.e. the Emacs Widget classes
I am working on.  I'd be very interested to make them
compatible to this abstract API if the idea flies.
