One last follow up.

So, I started to get freezes on my machine that I had to hard re-boot  
(no kernal panic, no warning, just freeze). After a couple of these,  
I reset everything listed below to the normal state

CHUD control panel to allow nap

sudo pmset dps 1

Better energy savings for the Energy Saver.

Crashes may have gone away (none for a few hours) AND...  
SuperCollider still runs fine. No idea what has changed, but  
something is working the way it should.

Quite strange.
