Okay... I think I found the solution.

After a restart, I finally noticed that the CHUD tools DID place a  
processor control panel in my prefs.  I set that to not nap.

Energy Save MUST be set to the Highest Performance setting without  
any changes.

In the Terminal, I use the pmset command (per the article forwarded  
earlier by James) and entered

sudo pmset dps 0

Once all three of these things were in place, my glitches  
disappeared. This seems quite redundant... but for now I can at least  
run my old code without any problems. There still seems to be  
something going on though. My MenuMeters CPU meter is still  
registering some high CPU loads from the system in general that I  
can't track down... but as long as SC runs ok, I'm not that worried  
for the time being...
