I have font smoothing turned off for sizes <= 10.
Monaco 10pt w/o smoothing looks good and IMHO is
noticeably easier to read than 9pt. I was giving
myself nasty shoulder aches hunching over to get close
enough to the screen to read the 9pt stuff :)  -- then
again I have a 12" iBook so those little letters are
REALLY small :)
