Oh I misunderstood. You want to record the main output, not the main
input.
Then you must be at the end of the chain. If you create a group under
the top group 0, then you can put all your events in there and chain
the record node after that. I normally would envision creating several
groups such as:
sequencing & automation
instruments
fx
mix
And use ids 1,2,3,4 for them.
If you create these as sub-groups of group 0, then your record node
could be chained after the mix group
